There is an intake form for you to fill out ahead of time, which will notify us of any pertinent medical history you may have as well as your preferences for your session. After your arrival, your therapist will show you to your room, where you will discuss your intake form. Then the therapist will leave the room and give you your privacy to undress only to the level you are comfortable with. You will get on the table and cover yourself with the sheets and blanket.
The therapist will only uncover the area she is working on and will only work on the agreed-upon areas. We ask that you inform your therapist if at any time they are using too much or not enough pressure, or if you are uncomfortable in any way (too warm, too cold, face rest not positioned right, etc.).
We want you to have the most enjoyable and therapeutic massage possible, and although we try to discuss all possible preferences ahead of time, we have never been able to master the art of mind-reading, so your feedback at any time (before, during, or after the massage) is important!
We recommend that you fill out your intake form before you arrive. Also, please review our parking and policies to be prepared for your appointment.

Timing
At Breckels Massage Therapy a one-hour massage lasts one full hour. Once you are comfortable in your room, your therapist will start keeping track of time when they begin the actual massage and do not stop until at least 60 minutes have passed (assuming you have arrived on time). We typically allow 15 minutes in between massages to take care of all the incidentals. We are a massage-therapy studio, after all, where time naturally slows down. We never want to rush you in and out.
Benefits of Massage
Each person will respond to massage differently. Each therapist will offer a different style of massage. Research shows us new and interesting things every day about the benefits of massage. While we cannot guarantee any effects of massage, these are a few of the many general expected benefits that massage offers:
- Relieves pain from various causes
- Improves flexibility and range of motion
- Decreases soft tissue tension (skin, muscles, connective tissue called fascia that connects everything in the body)
- Stimulates lymph flow (the fluid in the lymphatic system that surrounds our body’s tissues and into blood circulation and is partly responsible for our bodies ability to fight infections)
- Increases circulation
- Reduces levels of cortisol in the blood (the hormone that is produced in the body, usually from stressful events, and may cause inflammation)
- Relieves stress
- Relieves headaches
- Enhances rehabilitation (from surgery, injury, and athletic training)
- Improves sleep
- Lowers blood pressure
- Reduces anxiety
If you have a specific condition that you would like to know if massage can help with, please contact us, we would be happy to discuss your personal needs. If we aren’t the best option to assist you with your personal needs, we will be honest about how we can help or assist you in finding a better option.
History
Breckels Massage Therapy was founded by Betsy Breckels in 1985. She started off as an individual therapist, working out of different businesses, and traveling directly to client’s houses. Over the years Breckels Massage Therapy has made it’s own home in various locations around Detroit. In 2004, Breckels Massage Therapy moved into the current location, on Mack Avenue, which features six beautiful treatment rooms.
In June of 2017, Betsy sold the business to her Business Manager and Massage Therapist, Amanda; so that she could carry on the same quality of care in the community, and with the same great staff that our clients have come to love, including Betsy. Amanda shared a similar vision for Breckels Massage Therapy to grow, and the team strives every day to bring highly professional and skilled massages to the greater Detroit area.
Our massage therapy clinic staff has grown to include many licensed massage therapists, friendly receptionists, and Betsy’s son, Jeff, who does janitorial and laundry work for the business.
Many of our clients have been with us since the beginning of Breckels and have seen the many changes as we continue to grow. Our old logo (above), which came to be known as ‘The Breckels Girl’, was developed for a postcard sent as a reminder to clients in the 1980s. While we all love our Breckels Girl, we wanted to introduce a new logo that we hoped to be a more modernized design and an inclusive representation of our Breckels community.
Our graphic designer asked us to describe the philosophy of Breckels in words that reflect our passion for quality massage therapy. She incorporated those descriptions into a couple of new logo options and we chose the one that best represents Breckels.
We hold a fond place in our hearts for the Breckels Girl as we hope to welcome all of our clients with our current logo design.
Feedback
Our philosophy has always been to provide the very best massage therapy suited to each client’s specific needs. We take pride in our work, and we cherish your feedback. Of course, we love the wonderful compliments we hear every day, but we also value your suggestions on how to make your massage experience better. Please let us know if there is any way we can improve our service. All feedback is welcomed and encouraged!
